Geothermal energy

Recent studies indicate that geothermal energy is among the least expensive sources of renewable energy. Although It is expected that most countries with the presence of geothermal power potential will increase their utilization of this power source in the future. This is especially the case where governments have put in place policies for reducing the dependency on fossil fuels and increasing the use of renewable and environmentally friendly power sources. If designed and developed sensibly, geothermal power plants provide one of the most environmentally friendly power generation options.

Verkís geothermal power division provides comprehensive services to owners, developers and operators for various applications of geothermal energy:

  • Generation of electricity
  • Direct use of geothermal water
  • Indirect use of geothermal water and steam
  • Integrated utilization of geothermal steam and hot water.

Geothermal power plants

Geothermal power has, over the last decade, gradually increased its importance as an electrical power source in Iceland. Currently, installed power of geothermal power plants in Iceland is 575 MW, which translates to 23.4% of total installed power. The total installed power worldwide is about 10 GWe. The Icelandic geothermal power industry has considerably expanded over the last years, with the 8 units generating 340 MW starting production successfully over the 2006-2008 period.

Verkís has participated in implementation of all those projects and almost all the geothermal power plant projects in Iceland since the 1970‘s.

Geothermal district heating

In 2004 the total installed power for geothermal district heating in the world was over 28,3 GWth. Iceland has been among the leading countries in this field with first house heated with geothermal water in 1909 and the first commercial geothermal district heating developed in 1930. In 2008, the total installed heating power in Iceland amounted to about 1,4 GWth.  About 86% of Icelandic homes now use the Earth´s thermal energy for space heating and heating of domestic hot water.

With expertise dating back to 1962, Verkís is today the leader in geothermal district heating in Iceland and has worked with all kinds of geothermal district heating projects worldwide.
