Civil Engineering
The scope of this division is technical consulting service regarding buildings and other constructions for geothermal power plants and district heating. The division consists of well educated engineers and technical assistants with vast experience and knowledge in their field.
The main projects of the division are geothermal power plants in Hengill area, Svartsengi, Reykjanes, Husavik and Krafla. It participates in the design of a geothermal power plant in El Salvador and other smaller plants as well. In addition the division has also supervised design and consultancy for most pumping stations, storage tanks, main pipelines and other structures for HS orka and HS veitur, (formerly Hitaveita Suðurnesja) and Reykjavik Energy,. The division staff has also worked on other general building projects such as schools, apartment buildings, industry- and office buildings, etc.
The scope of the staff for geothermal power plants and district heating is project and design management, structural design of buildings, piping fundaments and other structures, fire safety design, grounding, road design, design of outdoor pipes below and above ground, design of well pads, surveying and all general supervision of these project parts, among other things.
To indicate the domestic experience possessed by the division and the firm as a whole in the field of geothermal powerplants, Verkis has been involved in design and supervision of construction in every geothermal power plant built in Iceland to date, i.e. the plants Nesjavellir, Hellisheidi, Svartsengi, Reykjanes and Krafla. The division is now working on the design and preparation of a geothermal power plant in Hverahlid as well as an extension of the plant in Reykjanes. Estimated power of the aforementioned plants is around 825 MW in electric power and 850 MW in thermal power.
The division is well equipped with necessary instruments and software for projects within its field.
