Electrical- and Control systems

The department “Electrical- and Control" systems consists of a group of skilled engineers and technical assistants with vast experience on electrical systems, as well as control- and protection systems for geothermal power plants, district heating systems and other related systems.

This group of specialists has a record of many projects that have been successfully completed in recent years, including new plants as well as refurbishment projects.  Presently the group is working on a few projects, the largest being the power plant at Hellisheiði for Orkuveita Reykjavíkur and the power plant at Reykjanes for Hitaveita Suðurnesja.  Verkís is also working in co-operation with others on the project planning report for three new geothermal power plants in north-east Iceland for Landsvirkjun Power.  Smaller projects are also ongoing, e.g. for district heating projects.  Further, the department staff has always emphasized operation oriented services, such as maintenance support, operational improvements, monitoring of equipment condition, training, education etc.  Many such projects are constantly ongoing for all previously listed plants and owners.  The department staff is also frequently recruited for work on their specialist field for other business segments of Verkís, such as Hydropower and Power transmission and Industry.

Apart from education and experience, our staff has a variety of training on various fields of knowledge, equipment operation, software tools etc.  For example in the design work, software tools like DigSilent are used for analysis and calculations on electrical power systems.  For testing of the operability of PLC- and SCADA systems and pre testing of programming we operate a hardware lab.  We also use our own development of Oracle database for larger control systems, database operated CAD tools for the generation of detailed wiring drawings etc.  In testing and commissioning of protection systems our Omicron Test Universe is the core of all activities. We are also proud of our electronic- and fine mechanic workshop, where we conduct testing, maintenance and repair work on various apparatus used in control- and protection systems.

The total number of staff is 19 and the department manager is Snæbjörn Jónsson, Electrical Engineer M.Sc.
