Mechanical systems

Constructions

The division “Mechanical systems” consists of a group of skilled engineers and technical assistants with vast experience and expertise on designing Mechanical systems to utilize geothermal heat to produce electric power and for district heating systems.

In addition the staff takes on other projects, designing machinery of all sorts, which in most cases is equipment requiring thermal- and fluid-dynamics design with emphasis on control and regulatory systems.

Structural design is also a big part of the work, because pressure vessel design and piping system's thermal stress design is an important part of the design process when it comes to utilization of geothermal power.

In recent years the main projects in this division have been mechanical system design in Reykjanesvirkjun (2x50 MW electric) and Svartsengi, extension 6 (30 MW electric) besides supervising the design of control stations and pumping stations for district heating in the capital area, on Sudurnes amongst other places.

Our staff has been involved in foreign projects. For example participation in the design of a geothermal power plant in El Salvador and Azores Islands, design of district heating in China, USA and other places.  The division has also made consultation for The World Bank for geothermal projects in Turkey.

The division is well equipped with necessary instruments and software to analyse problems that we encounter designing maschinery.

To mention a few, custom structural software, thermal and fluid dynamic software and also a powerful software to analyse pressure transients in piping systems.

The total number of staff is 11 and the division manager is Þorleikur Jóhannesson, Mechanical Engineer M.Sc.
