For decades, Verkís has been at the forefront of hydropower plant design and engineering in Iceland. Ever since 1932, when the first Icelandic consulting engineering firm was founded by Sigurður Thoroddsen, Verkís has accumulated experience in the hydropower sector. The firm has been the leading designer of most hydropower plants in Iceland, projects ranging in size from a few kW to 690 MW, harnessing heads up to 599 m.

The Hydropower and Power Transmission Division provides services related to most aspects of harnessing hydroelectric power, from preliminary or feasibility study to tender document preparation, final design and station start-up. This entails consultancy concerning necessary research, preparation of project schedules and cost estimates, comprehensive engineering design, and project monitoring, as well as advice concerning operation and maintenance of power station buildings and equipment.

The division also offers a full range of engineering consultancy services related to energy transmission and distribution, including system studies, preparation of project schedules and cost estimates, comprehensive design, project monitoring and management and advice on operation and maintenance. Furthermore, the division provides supervision services on the construction of hydropower plants and transmission facilities, including all necessary scheduling, as well as services related to the operation and maintenance of such facilities.

Moreover, the division provides consultancy pertaining to other types of power production such as tidal power and wind power, as well as reserve power generation.

The division has three departments: civil engineering, mechanical systems and electrical energy systems.
