Hydropower and Power Transmission

Three departments; civil engineering, mechanical systems and electrical energy systems pertain to the division of Hydropower- and transmission. The division provides comprehensive services to owners, developers and operators of hydropower production and power transmission facilities.

Services include resource evaluation, survey and site investigation, engineering feasibility studies, project planning and cost estimation, preparation of tender documents and technical specifications, and engineering detail design in the above mentioned fields. Furthermore, the division provides supervision services on the construction of hydropower plants and transmission facilities, including all necessary scheduling, as well as services related to the operation and maintenance of such.

The division also provides engineering consultancy in other renewable energy fields, such as tidal, wind and binary power plants.

Ever since 1932, when the first Icelandic consulting engineering firm was founded by Sigurður Thoroddsen, Verkís has accumulated experience in the hydropower sector. The firm has been the leading designer of most hydropower plants in Iceland, projects ranging in size from a few kW to 690 MW, harnessing heads up to 599 m. The staff has participated in design and supervision of such facilities in numerous countries worldwide.

The division works in close cooperation with the various specialists of other Verkís divisions, e.g. on the environment.

Head of Hydropower- and Transmission Division is Helgi Þór Helgason.
