21/11/2017 : Formal Startup of Theistareykir Geothermal Power Plant


The Theistareykir project is a 90 MW geothermal power plant in the north east of Iceland, erected in two 45 MW stages. Formal startup of the first phase took place on November 17th while the second phase is scheduled to go online in the spring of 2018.


3/11/2017 : Ásgeir Trausti Dropped 7" into the ocean

Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and collaborator, Ásgeir Trausti dropped a one-of-a-kind 7” encased inside a 'bottle' into the ocean today. The world-renowned musician teamed up with Verkís, scientist Ævar vísindamaður and the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service to execute this unique project.

The Arctic Circle Assembly will take place for the fifth time in Harpa, Reykjavík Iceland on October 13th to 15th 2017. Verkís participates in organizing the program in collaboration with EFLA, Mannvit og Landsvirkjun Power and is one of the sponsors for the conference.

5/9/2017 : Verkís will attend Dialogues for the Future of Energy 2017


Þorleikur Jóhannesson, Verkís geothermal expert, will be attending Dialogues for the Future of Energy 2017 (DEMEX). The conference will take place in Mexico September 11th to 13th. With over 25 years of experience in the field of geothermal utilization and managing geothermal projects, Þorleikur will participate in the workshop focused on Geothermal Direct Application.



The number of projects using BIM methodology has increased significantly in recent years at Verkís. As designers get a better handle on the methodology and improve the project team coordination around BIM projects, their benefits are evidently revealed. BIM gives designers greater freedom to seek more cost-effective solutions that lead to optimization for the client during the construction and operation of the building.




Last year a major renovation was launched on one of Reykjavik's most famous landmarks and most visited tourist destinations, Perlan. The origin of the “Pearl” began years ago as large water supply tanks located on a hill overlooking Reykjavik and the surrounding areas. However, in 1991 the dome was constructed and the structure transformed into a restaurant and cafe. 


8/6/2017 : Verkís held a Short Course on Geothermal Project Management in Kenya


Verkís staff participated in an Introductory Short Course on Geothermal Project Management held in Naivasha during May 26-30 for 16 participants from Kenya Electricity Generating Company Ltd. (KenGen) and Geothermal Development Company Ltd. (GDC).

12/1/2017 : Message in A Bottle traveling for a whole year

One year ago (January 10th 2016), Verkís, in collaboration with Ævar the scientist, a popular Icelandic children´s TV personality, launched two messages in a bottle. The bottles were equipped with a satellite transmitter that locates the them every four hours via a GPS receiver. The travels of the bottles can be observed live on Verkis´ website as well as the children's section of the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service´s website. It is safe to say that their travels have been remarkable since tossed out of a coast guard helicopter 40 kilometres southwest of Reykjanes peninsula with a great deal of audience following along.
