Verkís has been involved in all design of the Leifur Eiríksson airport.  It was opened 6 April 1987 and later extended with the opening of the South Building in 2001 to comply with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement. The North Building was later enlarged and finished in 2007.

Today the number of passengers passing through the airport is constantly increasing. Verkís is working on the newest extension of the North building to the West.  Included in that project is new cargo reception, new entrance gates, expansion of baggage handling along with new storage and office rooms.

The East expansion will be built on top of the apron and will be the new baggage control room for arrivals.  The total extension is 4.300m2.
