Uttarakhand Signs Landmark MoU with Verkís for Geothermal Development

The Government of Uttarakhand in Northern India has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Verkís for geothermal exploration and development in the region. This agreement underscores a shared commitment to advancing renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who participated virtually, and Iceland’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Benedikt Höskuldsson. Representing Verkís at the signing was Haukur Þór Haraldsson, who formalized the agreement on behalf of the company.
Uttarakhand has already identified around 40 geothermal sites, thanks to studies conducted by the Geological Survey of India and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology. The MoU aligns with India’s vision of transitioning towards clean and inclusive energy solutions while ensuring environmental security.
Chief Minister Dhami emphasized the importance of this collaboration in advancing sustainable energy initiatives, highlighting that the proposed project has already gained the support of key ministries, including the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, and the Ministry of External Affairs.
This collaboration adds to Iceland and India’s growing partnership in geothermal energy, exemplified by similar initiatives in nearby Himachal Pradesh and ongoing explorations in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Verkís is proud to have Haukur Þór Haraldsson represent the company in this milestone, contributing to accelerating renewable energy solutions globally.
