Project overview:
The hospital is a state run institution. The main building has four wings, ranging in height from three to fifteen storeys. The latest extension, completed in 2010, houses a new emergency room, combining all ER services in the Reykjavík area in one location.

From the conception of the National University Hospital branch in Fossvogur, Verkís has designed all electrical systems as well as all HVAC and piping systems. In recent years the hospital underwent a thorough renovation, during which Verkís conducted complete analyses and reengineering of all systems, re-assessed all fire engineering criteria, and developed escape route maps for the whole building complex. Verkís has also developed and operated a web based project documentation system for the entire renovation project.

Engineering of a high tech hospital demands a high degree of specialization and requires a thorough understanding of the operational environment of the hospital and all of its divisions. Among the specialized divisions engineered by Verkís are: surgical theatres, emergency units, medical imaging units, isolation wards, a data center and a ground helicopter platform.

Verkís has developed a specialized hospital engineering skill base and has assisted Icelandic authorities in training and educating hospital employees and service groups.
