Hydro opens a new alumininum smelter in Karmøy, Norway

The project, Karmøy Technology Pilot, is supervised by the Norwegian company Hydro and involves the construction of a new aluminium smelter which is the most environmentally friendly in the world. Less energy is needed for production than in any other plant. HRV, owned by Verkís and Mannvits, was a participant in the project from the beginning.

The reason that the energy efficiency of the new plant is much higher than in other aluminium plants in the world is that the furnaces have been optimized so that not nearly as much energy is needed in the production. It is estimated that the energy requirement for production will be 15% lower than the world average and 75,000 tons of aluminium can be produced each year. Hydro has already succeeded in achieving a leading position among aluminium producers in terms of energy savings and reduction of emissions in experiments carried out on the furnaces prior to the construction of the plant.

HRV participated in the development of solutions for the design of the anode production facility and cleaning process from the early stages of the work. Performance and appearance of the anode production facility regarding the arrangement of machinery, the design of houses, electrical wiring, ventilation and buildings, have been in the hands of HRV from the beginning. HRV also participated in the procurement, receiving and installation of machinery and equipment in the anode production facility and the cleaning processing part of the plant.

HRV, owned by Verkís and Mannvits, was included in the project from the beginning. The company was founded in 1996 with both companies equally providing employees for all HRV projects when needed.
