Verkís at Nordiwa 2019

Nordiwa 2019

Today Sigurður Grétar Sigmarsson, Water resources engineer at Verkis, will deliver a presentation at Nordic Waste Water Conference (NORDIWA) in Helsinki, Finland. The title of his presentation is Strategic redevelopment of Reykjavik´s combined sewers – Strategic redevelopment of stormsewer infrastructure using SuDS.

Sigurður´s presentation is about a project he and two other engineers at Verkís, Vala Jónsdóttir, Environmental engineer and Hörn Hrafnsdóttir, Water resources engineer, are working on for Veitur, Reykjavik´s water utility.

Veitur are working towards reducing CSO´s and replacing its aging combined sewer infrastructure with separate storm- and sanitary sewers, the capital cost investments necessary and the complexity of achieving full separation in Reykjavik´s 230-hectare Laugardalur watershed has resulted in plans for a so called „hybrid sewer system”.

In this presentation, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and statistical analysis of rainfall series is presented demonstrating the quantitative improvements of volume reduction in the wastewater system. A refurbished 1400mm sewer pipe is continued to be maintained for combined sewer while a new smaller 1000mm stormsewer pipe with capacity less than the design storm along with overflow structures and sustainable stormwater practices are installed.
