Varmahlíð substation

Two new substations will be built, in Sauðárkrókur and Varmahlíð.

The substation in Varmahlíð houses five 66kV switch gear bays. Sauðárkrók’s only connection to the transmission system is 66 kV line from Varmahlíð, which is over 40 years old.

Due to plans for increased energy consumption in Sauðárkrókur, it’s intended to strengthen the site’s connection to the transmission system and increase energy delivery and security of supply by laying a 66 kV underground cable, Sauðárkrókslína 2, from Varmahlíð to Sauðárkrókur in Skagafjörður.

The only connection Saudarkrokur to the transmission system is 66 kV air line from Varmahlíð, which has just over 40 years old. The underground cable will increase energy security and more than double the area’s capacity, and it’s intended to be 24 kilometers long. The existing overhead line, Sauðárkrókslína, will be connected by a underground cable to the substation in Sauðárkrókur.
