Vaðlaheiði Tunnel is a tunnel that was constructed under Vaðlaheiði by Eyjafjörður.

The tunnel shortens the distance between Akureyri and Húsavík by 15.7 km.

More about the project

The tunnel is 7.4 km long between Eyjafjörður, opposite Akureyri and Fnjóskadalur. The tunnel shortens the distance between Akureyri and Húsavík by 15.7 km, and there is no longer a need to take the mountain road through Víkurskarð, where the roads often get impassable in winter.

The total length of the tunnel portals is about 320 m, 84 m on the Eyjafjörður side and 224 m on the Fnjóskadalur side. There are 14 recesses in the tunnel, four of which are turnaround recesses. Inside the tunnel there are four concrete technical spaces and two next to the tunnel portals. The tunnel is about 7.17 km long in rock and the total length of the tunnel is 320 m, a total of 7.5 km. The cross-section is according to Norwegian regulations, and is called T9.5, its width is about 9.5 m at road height, cross-sectional area 66.7 m2. The project also covered the construction of a 1.2 km long road in Eyjafjörður along with a roundabout and a 2.9 km road section in Fnjóskadalur, or a total of 4.1 km. The construction of roads also includes the construction of road connections in both locations.
