10/11/2016 : Verkis participates in Argeo-C6 short course on project management for geothermal development


Verkis geothermal experts participated in a short course on project management for geothermal development in the framework of the 6th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGEO  - C6) in Ethiopia 31st October – 4th November. The course was held at the United Nations Convention Center in Addis.

Landsvirkjun has recently employed a new atmospheric separator to measure the performance of geothermal wells. Verkís was responsible for the design of the device.

Icelandic Geothermal (Verkís, Mannvit, ÍSOR and Vatnaskil) will be at booth 28. The 6th African Rift Geothermal (ARGeo-C6) Conference will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 31 October - 4 November 2016. The theme of ARGeo-C6 is “Geothermal: Solution to Africa Energy needs”. 


21/10/2016 : Verkís geothermal expert, lectured about district heating at Cornell University


Þorleikur Jóhannesson, Verkís geothermal expert, was recently invited to Cornell University in New York to lecture about district heating. He tought students in a course on the use of geothermal energy for electricity and house heating.

21/9/2016 : “Lava” district heating in the Westman Islands the first Enhanced Geothermal system in the world?


Iceland is well-known for its exemplary utilization of geothermal resources, having today over 90% of households heated up via utilization of geothermal resources. 


14/9/2016 : Heat pump to be connected to the Westman Islands' district heating


District heating system was started up in the Westman Islands (Vestmanneyjar) in 1977. Initially, heat was extracted from the lava fields of the 1973 Heimaey eruption. Steam collection pipes were buried into the lava and steam lead to heat pumps heating the return water from the double piped district heating distribution system.

Following an open tender in April this year, Verkís Consulting Engineers, signed an agreement with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen Region vest) for the project "Fv 505 Skjæveland - Foss Eikeland". 


23/8/2016 : Due-diligence and technical assistance in the framework of PLUTO (EBRD), Turkey


As of this spring, Verkís has been engaged together with ISOR, Iceland Geosurvey, and local support to conduct due-diligence and provide technical assistance for one of the geothermal projects under consideration by the EBRD within the Early Stage Geothermal Support Framework (PLUTO).


17/8/2016 : Overhaul of the Bjarnarflag geothermal power station


The first well in the geothermal field in Bjarnarflag was drilled in 1963 and was originally utilised for manufacturing of lightweight concrete blocks. In 1966 the diatomite plant “Kísiliðjan” started utilizing the geothermal steam for drying. The Bjarnarflag geothermal power station has brought online in 1969, the first geothermal power plant in Iceland.

7/4/2016 : Binary geothermal power plant in Canakkale up and running


It has been now about 6 months since the 7 MW ORC geothermal power plant in Canakkale, Turkey, went online. The project is considered a success. Verkís was a major sub-contractor of Atlas Copco Energas for the project.
